Free Birthday Ecards And Hoping For The Best

By Calvin Patel

I'm one of those people who can't remember when my friends' birthdays are. I'm lucky if I remember when someone in my family has a birthday. Most people understand and accept that, but sometimes it can get tricky if I can't even manage to send off some kind of happy birthday card.

Just a little while ago I found myself in a situation where someone very important to me had a birthday coming up. Which is to say: I remembered that her birthday was coming up the day before it actually arrived. I was going to be in trouble if I couldn't scrape something together - and fast.

Just like so many others ahead of me, I turned to the Internet in my time of need. I was sure there would be a lot of ideas for a cheap or fast gift. Surely there would be some convenient instructions for making a simple happy birthday card or, in the worst case scenario, instructions on how to offer the most sincere apology ever heard.

What I came across was a site that offered free birthday ecards. I had heard about these before, and had even received one a few years ago. At the time, I have to say, I wasn't all that impressed. It had some overly cute puppies prancing around on it, and the sudden noise of' dogs barking the Happy Birthday song was a little embarrassing in an office situation.

But I was desperate this time, so I looked a little further into the free birthday ecards that they listed on their site. They were a little different from the one I received so long ago. There were a lot of options available that actually seemed like something she would enjoy.

I explored the site and skipped over anything with cheesy graphics and sounds and went straight for something that I thought would impress her a little more than that. There were some free birthday ecards that let me embed YouTube videos and those seemed to be the most interesting. I had to do some more research to find the right video (a real live puppy dog giving the camera the saddest look ever) and knew that it would be so heart-wrenching that she'd have no choice but to forgive me. I made sure to end it on a happy note, though, that would make her smile.

Of course, you never know how it will go until you actually send it. There's something pretty impersonal about sending happy birthday cards through email, but at the same time I can only hope I personalized it enough to make her smile.

Okay, I admit, this is definitely not the same as sending flowers or, you know, jewelry. But at the same time this required more effort and thought than a simple card from the corner store would have. At this point I can't say if a free birthday ecard is good enough, but I suppose I'll find out soon enough.
