The Attractions Of Weston-super-mare - Somerset

By Frederick Hoymer

Whilst the UK is not exactly world renowned for its beaches, there are some that offer pretty much everything you would want from a great day out. Weston-Super-Mare is one such town that contains a wonderful beach and attached attractions that bring in tourists from all over the world.

This beach is most certainly the most prominent attraction in the area and comes to life throughout the summer months, short as they may be within England. The beach is lined by a wonderful promenade with glorious views over the sea. Typically for an English sea-side resort, there are associated sights and sounds of seagulls calling and fish and chip shops teasing their appealing scent. There are also piers stretching into the water as well as small amusement areas with rides and gift shops for the kids.

However, below the surface there is much more to this old seaside town. If you visit the local visitors centre you will likely find some local attractions that will interest you. Unlike many beaches around the UK, the beach here is lovely and sandy and on a summers day it can be a glorious place to take the family. Here there are donkey rides and a paddling pool for the kids, a little train that runs along the sea-front, and an aquarium with some exotic species of marine life that you will be unlikely to encounter in the cold British waters.

The grand pier that stretches far out into the sea is also one of the more prominent attractions for any tourist in the area. This features an array of fun games and little shops along with a fun-fare and a large pavilion at the end.

Beyond this there a countless shows and events around the area throughout the year. The playhouse theatre situated on the pier can house up to about 700 people and puts on different productions the year round. The area has recently become synonymous with its annual summer concert hosted by T4, an entertainment channel, that brings together some of the finest acts in the country for a massive televised event.

Beyond any glitz and glamour the town also features a number of places of cultural interest. One of the most interesting is the helicopter museum which houses one of the largest collections of helicopters in the world. There are also art galleries and local history museums.

The area is also home to some wonderful treks and walks along the sea front and into the beautiful surrounding countryside. There is therefore something for everyone in this lovely town and area.
