Good Skin Care Is Important From An Early Age

By Daryl Haynes

The skin is the body's largest organ and its main function is to protect against heat, ultra-violet light, infection and injury. The skin also regulates body temperature, provides a waterproof barrier to prevent loss of body fluids, and it responds to five of our six senses. The surface of the skin constantly sheds dead cells, which are renewed every 30 days. Good skin care is important, as unclean skin attracts bacteria, which thrives on sweat and sebaceous gland secretions.

Genetics play a major part in the type of skin you are born with. Whether you are white, coffee-colored or black, your skin can be smooth and fine, or rough and lined. Know your skin type so you can care for it properly. There are products available to care for all types of skin.

Skin can be sensitive, dry, oily or a combination of all of these. If your skin is tight after you have washed it, or it feels and looks itchy, it is most likely dry. Dry skin is the first to show signs of aging, therefore it needs special care.

The best way to care for dry skin is to wash daily with a rich, creamy cleanser and warm water. Always rinse with warm water and gently pat your skin dry. Avoid using harsh commercial soap. Apply a rich moisturizer to your skin to act as a barrier to the weather.

Oily skin is often shiny with large pores that can be prone to breakouts because the sebaceous glands are overactive and produce more oil than needed. Oily skin must be cleansed with warm water and soap to prevent the pores from becoming clogged. Use oil-free moisturizers to prevent oiliness during the day.

Caring for sensitive skin can be difficult unless suitable products are used. Mild, natural and perfume-free products will help stop constant allergic reactions. A gentle approach to cleansing and moisturizing is vital. Consult with a skin specialist if your skin is constantly irritated and itchy.

If you have combination skin, you need to give it special care. You need to treat the oily areas with oil-free products that minimize breakouts. Gently cleanse and moisturize the dry areas on the sides of your face, cheeks and your eye area.

Remember that your skin is a living, breathing organ of your body. It must also be cared for from the inside. If your diet is lacking in nutrients, this will show on your skin. You need to make sure you drink enough water to keep your skin hydrated. You should also have adequate sleep every day.
