The Effect Of Cosmetics Advertisement On The Teen Market

By Jerome Vang

The word "cosmetics" can describe a lot of different products. They cover hair products, skin care products, and make up. They can also cover non-prescription eye wear. The advertising of these products is a huge market. That does not mean they are good for it though.

The advertising market for today's beauty industry is full of campaigns that feature beautiful women with perfect features. Consumers are then told they can look that way too, if they buy the product. This type of marketing has garnered a bad reaction from the teen market.

These advertisements show girls getting flattering attention from males while looking flawless and beautiful. This type of image makes girls think the only way for them to get that kind of attention is for them to be beautiful. While it sells the product, it also lowers the self-esteem of the customer.

Depression is the normal result of advertising like this. Teen years are the most impressionable years in a young girl's life. This is where they learn to live in the adult world. If they think they have to be beautiful in order to be a success in life, this is an unrealistic outlook.

Skin care products are a good example of this kind of marketing. Most, but not all, skin care products offered these days use celebrities or hired models to star in their commercial campaigns. Actors and models already have a bad reputation for being "made up" or airbrushed. Companies using them to get to the teen market just add salt to the wound. They are considered role models so if they look perfect, girls think they have to too.

When teens see commercials like that, they think they have to look like what they see in order to be happy. That is an unrealistic outlook, and should not be allowed to be sent through television or other mediums.

Television is not the only guilty party. Magazine advertisements are even worse. The models featured in ads for make up and other beauty products don't look realistic. They are airbrushed and perfect. There is no such thing as perfect beauty. In today's society, there is far too much pressure put on teens to look perfect.

Companies are taking a stance against low self-esteem. Perfection is not used in any of their product media. The act of using real customers to advertise their products is becoming more common place. This is the best form of advertising. Though celebrity endorsement is still popular it's not the only form being used now. It is good for teenagers to see individuals just like them using the products they might use.

Everywhere you look today, there is an advertisement for some cosmetic product or another. Look a little closer at them. They have changed for the most part. Now they are more realistic.
